Before the 19th amendment, and before women's campaign for the right to vote, women were mostly housewives with their only job being to raise their children. Women were not respected in society equally to men. For example, women didn't have equal pay or voice in government, and they were expected to act a certain way and have certain jobs. After about 72 years of women's suffragists campaigning for the right to vote, creating organizations, and even breaking the law in order to vote, the 19th amendment was passed by congress on June 4th, 1919 and ratified on August 18th, 1920. The 19th amendment gave women the right to vote, and impacted all of the men and women in the United States. After the 19th Amendment, women gained respect in society and voice in government. With this new respect and power, women were eventually allowed to go to college, get jobs in fields such as medicine, and dress however they wanted. Also, women were eventually even able to be in congress and hold political positions. The Declaration of Sentiments, a document created by suffragists, stated that all men and women are created equal. After the 19th Amendment gave women the right to vote, they were finally equal to men. Today women have the same rights and responsibilities as men in politics, education and social life; this is all because the 19th Amendment had a big impact on the U.S. and gave women a voice.
