The 19th Amendment stated:
" The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or and state on account of sex. Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation" |
The 19th Amendment allowed equal voting rights to all men and women; you can't be denied to vote based on your sex.
Although the 15th amendment was similar, it only allowed African Americans to vote. |
In the picture above, it shows that women were first granted voting rights in the western states even before the 19th amendment.

This newspaper was published the day after the 19th Amendment was passed by congress, June 5th 1919. The article on the left side of the page is called "Suffrage Wins In Senate, Now Goes To States."
The article starts out saying;
"WASHINGTON, June 4 - After a long and persistent fight advocates of woman suffrage won a victory in the Senate today when that body, by a vote of 56 to 25, adopted the Susan Anthony amendment to the Constitution. The suffrage supporters had two more than the necessary two-thirds vote of Senators present. Had all the Senators known to be in favor of suffrage been present the amendment would have had 66 votes, or two more than a two-thirds vote of the entire Senate."

Impact of the 19th Amendment:
In the Seneca Falls Convention, the Declaration of Sentiments was created, stating that all men and women are created equal. Now women were finally equal to men under the law and had a voice in political issues. But the 19th Amendment had a big impact on the lives women, besides just granting voting rights. When the 19th Amendment was created, women got more respect in society. Now that women were respected, it also gave women the right for better jobs and a better education. For example, women could practice in medicine, law and the sciences. Women also felt more comfortable to dress however they wanted. Having the 19th Amendment wasn't only to get the right to vote, but it also helped women be equal as men in society and gave them the ability to vote on issues to improve their lives.
